How to thread the bobbin winder on an industrial sewing machine

Industrial straight sewer

A friend emailed me with this question, so I thought I’d share my answer with everyone.

Bobbin winder set-up

Take the end of the thread from your spool that is sitting on the thread-holding contraption (that feeds the thread to the needle).

Take the thread

Instead of taking it through the machine to the needle, take it to the little thread guide at the far right hand side of the table.

Thread through hole

Thread it through the little hole in the thread guide, then back, over and around the tension discs so the thread slips between them. The thread should be travelling from above, down the back of the tension discs and back towards you from underneath.

Thread through tension discs

Then take the end of the same thread to the bobbin, which you will have placed on the bobbin winder at the near right hand side of the machine/table. Wind it from below, up and over a few times.

Thread onto bobbin

Push the bobbin winder down so it clicks into place onto the machine belt.

Press to engage

Engaged

At this point, MAKE SURE THE FOOT OF THE MACHINE IS IN THE UP POSITION, or the feed dogs will wear away the bottom of your machine foot. Which is not desirable.

Foot up

Turn the machine on, and press the treadle. The bobbin winder should wind away merrily until the bobbin is full, at which point the winder will pop back up away from the machine belt.

Partly wound

Snip the thread, remove the bobbin from the winder, and you have a nice full bobbin to use.

Bobbin

Voila!

I’m wondering how to load a bobbin without the needle moving while you do it. Thank you. Donna Boyes

  2. That’s certainly not possible on my machine; it’s just not made that way. I believe there are some domestic machines that are made to do that, but it’s not anything you have to adjust, it’s just that the bobbin holder winds separately to the sewing mechanism. I hope that helps!

  3. oh thankyou thankyou thankyou.
i’ve been searching for this tutorial at youtube and almost gave up.
i bought an industrial sewing machine (singer2591) last november,
but i was too busy with college and somehow i forgot how to wind the bobbin.
i’m afraid to try because the machine costs me a fortune.
thank you so much! you’re a great help!
no one post about winding a bobbin on an industrial sewing machine.
    thanks again :)

  4. Hi Aida,

SO glad I could help! Do let me know if there’s anything else you’re struggling with, and I’d be happy to post about it if it’s something I can help with.

  5. Thaks for the info. We have an old singer and are having difficulty correctly threading the bobbin, When we try to sew we get a tangled mess on the underside, Any suggestions?

  6. Hard to answer without more information (or having a look at the machine myself). It sounds like either the bobbin isn’t sitting in its case properly; or it’s wound in the wrong direction; or the top thread (that goes through the needle)has overly loose tension. Or all of the above!

Bobbins should always be wound on in the opposite direction to the direction the thread is pulled when it’s in the bobbin case (if that makes sense). Sometimes the bobbin case is fixed in the machine, and sometimes you have to put it in place (should make a nice ‘click’ when it goes in), depending on the machine. There may be some tiny part that has worn: that happened to me recently, and I had to buy a new bobbin case.

Without knowing more about the specifics, it’s hard to be more precise: you may need to take it to a mechanic or have someone experienced look at it. I hope I’ve been of some help.

  7. Thanks a million for this post!
so useful and helpful, now I can get started with my industrial machine- finally!
